15/02/2021 - Post-Demo Day

Did You Like The Demo?

I didn't get a ton of feedback from the demo, but from the bit I did it seems like players were more favourable towards it than the last one.

What's Changed?

  • Screenshot feature disabled. It was causes people's anti-viruses to flag the game as a false positive.
  • Player Movement code adjusted and fixed in places. Controls for vertical and horizontal movement at the same time are still being worked on.
  • Fixed "Cargo Container L" causing bugs.
  • Map screen's background is now more opaque.
  • Fixed a bug where the dock of circle station map would disappear.

Things To Do

Thanks to the feedback I got, this list is now crazy long. But here's a summarised version:

  • Fix problem where you can buy skins you're currently using or previously bought.
  • Multiple inputs are broken on keyboard.
  • Repair and rest feature needs additional features, such as allowing the player to repair individual attributes, even partially.
  • Galaxy generation needs adjustment.
  • Game fail conditions need to be put into place.
  • UI for the total mass of the ship and cargo, direction of travel with getting a mission, additional stats, etc.; need to be added.
  • UI adjustments for currently existing elements like showing money within the station menus.
  • Map screen requires additional features and changes.
  • New mission types.
  • Thrust upgrades need balancing when carrying lighter loads.

Notes

In case you hadn't noticed, I haven't been updating as much lately, there's a reason for that I'll get into in a minute; but you should probably not expect as many updates throughout the next year. Don't worry, the project isn't being abandoned or anything. When I do update, it'll likely be larger bulks of stuff being done.

Anyway, with this, I'm currently putting most of my effort into the controls on both keyboard and controller. Game feel is the make or break aspect of most games, and this is no exception. Once that's done with, I will probably focus on the generation code and make some improvements, including spitting out a seed. That should make saving & loading a bit easier once I finally get around to it. After that, more missions types. And I haven't forgotten about NPCs, but you'll be waiting a bit on those.

Jam? Fighting Games?

I made a game for Global Game Jam 2021, you can't download a demo unfortunately because we never finished it, but a good chunk of my time lately has gone toward fixing and adding to it. If I ever get around to finishing it, I'll drop a link to the Itch.io page in a following Devlog. The other project I've been working on is a 3D fighting game. It isn't intended to go beyond the prototype stage, but it ended up being more of an effort than I originally planned for. Some time have been saved thanks to Mixamo and the animation assets they have, but there's still a lot of work to. It will get its own page soon as well.

Right, now that I'm done making excuses I will attempt to get back to working a sensible schedule.
