13/08/2020 - Now Supporting Controllers

I'm Back!

You're somewhat regular updates have returned after a decent hiatus. Christ it's hot.

Controller Support

After finally updating Unity to the 2020 version, I decided to move over to the new input system. It's a bit of a headache trying to understand it at first, but I got the hang of it. The additional functionality and better support for controllers is just miles ahead of the previous system. I can finally make different controls for different in-game systems, disable/enable them at will, and have multiple control schemes. Plus, with the new controller stuff, I can have more generic inputs meaning I no longer need to specify different axis for each different controller. This was especially problematic when I was working on BHLS where my controller support was limited to PS4 controllers, and if you tried to use an Xbox controller, it would break.

Anyway, currently menus are partially working. The main and pause menu mostly work, the inventory menu can be used, but station menus are currently not working. I'm need to re-do some of the UI with considerations to gamepads in mind, so I'm not gonna continue implementing it until I get around to doing that. So consider it partially implemented for now.

Bailing On Missions

Once I got back from my break, the first thing I got to work on was the ability to cancel missions. Now the player can click on the mission in their Open Orders tab, and have a small dialogue box ask if they want to abandon the mission or not. Currently there's no penalty for ditching missions, but that will change in the future.

Other Changes & Fixes

  • Adjusted fuel usage, so it will not been quite as gas guzzling.
  • Slight adjustments to UI.
  • Fixed a bug where colliding with debris wasn't causing a sound.
  • Fixed an audio bug where the thrusters would be audible even when not active. This was caused by changes from migrating to the new input system.

What's Next?

Having Cargo Get Damaged

Additional gameplay systems are currently not implemented yet because this aspect has been added yet. Plus, ship damage is a thing, why not cargo?

Upgrade Shop

Pretty standard stuff; spend money to get more fuel/oxygen/food/water, trailers for more storage capacity, and other stuff. Plus maybe some cosmetic items.

Map

I've been putting this off for too long.

Outro

It's very difficult to work in this heat, but I'll try my best.
